Walking Your Dog Is Not "Exercise"

By Kathy Reed of Dogdaze Designs

Many people believe that a brief twenty minute walk daily is "exercise" for the dog. Actually, exercise should be OFF LEASH to give your dog the most benefit. After all, if your own exercise should consist of at least three times weekly when you have "worked out" till your face is flushed and your heart is beating stronger...of course your dog needs this kind of exercise also. To do this you need to find a good fenced in area that is safe for your dog to run in, and then OF COURSE you do need to take along plastic bags with you in case your dog should decide to eliminate during his exercise period.
If you don't have a dog park you can go to to exercise your pet with good fetch games or just plain running out and stretching, you might check your local town for a ball park or tennis courts, or even check out folks in your area who may have a super large fenced in backyard. Empty football fields on Sunday mornings are GREAT places to exercise your dog. It is never a good idea to use any area that has been sprayed recently, nor is it a good idea to use any area without permission. But most folks that I have asked are willing to let you have a period of time every week that you can run your dog on a particular area, the key is to ask the right people. I used to exercise my dog in one town where I lived on the tennis courts of a small city park (when there were no people there), all I had to do was ask the parks and street department.
Just be creative and look around. Your dog deserves a good running period at least three times a week.
